A CR# Technician welding

CR3 recently completed a potentially challenging welding on live equipment (WOLE) project on a Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit at the world’s largest refinery in Jamnagar, India.

The project consisted of welding a stainless-steel jacket around a branch line coming out of a large hot flue gas main header line operating at a temperature of more than 700°C.

Welding on live equipment is necessary when shutting down the equipment is not feasible due to operational requirements or significant downtime costs. In such cases, specialised procedures and safety precautions are implemented to ensure the safety of workers and prevent accidents or damage to the equipment.

Due to the extreme working conditions and limited access, the CR3 welding technician wore specialised personal protective equipment, including an ice jacket and executed the welding using the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) technique.

At CR3, safety is paramount with every project we undertake; during this project, the welder was accompanied by a support team who assisted him with his protective equipment and supplied him with fluids to maintain his hydration.

The welding was completed safely and on schedule, much to the client’s satisfaction, who commended the safe working practices and competencies displayed by CR3 throughout.
